Explore A Dong Silk - Best tailors in Hoian: Excellent quality for a commensurate price
Choosing a tailor shop in Hoi An is hard, as anyone who's come here knows. We toured four different shops, all of which had excellent TripAdvisor ratings, getting quotes from each of them, until we settled on A Dong and Mr. Xe's, the former for the quality and the latter for the affordability. The price differential was substantial; the highest quality suit at A Dong was 250 and came with only one pair of pants, compared to 140 at Mr. Xe's, which came with two pairs of pants, and shirts were 45 at A Dong compared with 20 at Mr. Xe's.
After the whole process was complete, however, the reason for the higher prices is clear; the suit I got at A Dong is the best-looking suit I've ever owned, and they nailed the stylishness on the first go. It also fits absolutely perfectly. My partner also had shirts and a blazer made for her and she looks fantastic in them. A Dong also had better quality fabrics than the other shops we visited, but they cost more as a result. As with every tailor shop in Hoi An, be prepared to come back over the course of multiple days to get everything, especially if you decide on day two or three that you want an additional shirt or blazer. It took three fittings for the suit to be completed; the initial, a second one to make sure everything looked good, and a third to finalize it, followed by a fourth visit to pick it up.
In sum, A Dong is the most expensive tailor in Hoi An, but they have the quality and expertise to back it up. If you're shopping on a budget, go to another shop along the line of Mr. Xe's where you'll get very good, but not perfect clothing for much cheaper. If you've got enough to splurge a bit but not go crazy, do what we did, which is have some pieces made at A Dong and some made elsewhere. And if you're rich, just go to A Dong and nowhere else.
